Sunrise Coal LLC announced a $30 million expansion for installation of manufacturing equipment at its recently reopened Carlisle Mine which is expected to create 20 additional jobs.

The coal company also requested a regular 10-year property tax abatement at the Sullivan County Redevelopment Commission meeting on Thursday.

The SCRC passed a resolution, recommending that the Sullivan County Council consider the company’s proposed Economic Revitalization Area and abatement request.

In addition to the 20 new jobs, the company plans to maintain its already 130 full-time salaried and hourly jobs.

Sunrise Coal currently employs 55 Sullivan County residents at the Carlisle Mine, with 111 more employed at their nearby Oaktown Mine in Knox County.

Sunrise Coal will make a similar presentation at the next Sullivan County Commissioners’ meeting on Monday.

If approved by the commissioners, the council would then consider the abatement request at its next meeting on Feb. 25. A public hearing would occur at its March meeting, when the council could vote on the tax abatement.
